Holy. Shit.
Final Fantasy VII, an RPG that haunted my childhood dreams, is being remade for PS4 (and probably later for other platforms). I don’t even own a PS4 and I am ridiculously excited.
The trailer makes it look great. My favorite part is the meta tone the voiceover takes:
The reunion at hand may bring joy. It may bring fear. But let us embrace whatever it brings. For they are coming back. At last, the promise has been made.
That mix of emotions is exactly how the Internet seems to be reacting: distinctly polarized, a mixed bag of either unbridled excitement or extreme trepidation.
I know where I fall on the spectrum. Only time will tell whether the remake is any good.
But let me have my childish glee for now. The game meant a great deal to me in the late nineties and early aughts, and it’s a game I’d plunge into in a heartbeat, even for the slimmest chance to recapture that joy I once knew.
