A status update on my writing goals this year:
I’ve written five stories, submitted two of them, and received three rejections (I sent the first one out twice).
None have been accepted yet.
Less than a glamorous beginning. I fell short of my goal, which was to submit one story a month. But it’s a far cry from what I had accomplished at the end of last year, which was basically nothing.
Now, each draft is better than the last.
If someone were to ask me what changed, I couldn’t tell them.
But if someone were to ask me for advice, I’d say read a dozen books on writing, find a writing group, and practice a whole hell of a lot.
(Which books? Start with this one: Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft.)
And of course, no writing education would be complete without these three style guides.
